[Media release] - With the Act to digitize the energy transformation process (GDEW), Germany is pushing ahead with the introduction of smart meters as local data and control nodes for a smart energy world. However, every digital access must be secured accordingly. Established security procedures, which are already being used successfully in online banking, will be used for this purpose. To securely store and manage the corresponding security certificates from the industry-specific public key infrastructure (called Smart Meter PKI), Teleseo uses a hardware security module (HSM) from Securosys.
The new smart meters according to GDEW consist of a Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW) and the actual meters for electricity and other media. The architecture of the overall system was developed by the Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI). The Smart Meter Gateway stores the measurement data in a calibratable form and functions as a local data and control node. It is based on a Privacy by Design concept and ensures that personal measurement data does not fall into the wrong hands. At the same time, the SMGW offers the possibility to address customer applications and devices via the public IP network with the same security standard.
Hardware Security Modules (HSM) are suitable for all applications in which sensitive data is transferred or stored. Because of this, hardware security modules fit perfectly into public key environments or support blockchain systems as well as Fintech applications. Securosys' HSM are multifunctional digital key safes that generate, manage and control access to keys.
About Teleseo
Teleseo develops and sells value-added services in Germany for the measurement and control units required by the Act on the Digitisation of the Energy Transition (Gesetz zur Digitalisierung der Energiewende - GDEW) for connection to the energy networks. Another central element offered by Teleseo is the operation of the metering and control unit in accordance with German energy law. Teleseo is only active in Germany. The GDEW-compliant metering and control units have mechanisms for maximum data security, which Teleseo successfully markets for various applications. Teleseo is based in Potsdam, Germany, and was founded in 2015.
